Even though there is more optimism from Pfizer and Moderna regarding their vaccines, consumers are still concerned. According to NMI’s Holiday Spending Insights Report, small businesses must implement proper sanitary procedures and touchless payment systems. This if they want to ensure their success during the 2020 holiday shopping season.

In the report, NMI says 46% of consumers are more likely to trust big box stores because they are more sanitary than small local businesses. The report goes on to say, small businesses must implement the right payment systems and safety protocols. With the right tools and protocols in place, small businesses can remain competitive.

Sanitary Mindfulness, Touchless Payments Key to Small Business Success

When it comes to contactless solutions, including payment systems, 23% of retailers say they lost sales because they don’t have this option. Another 43% of consumers are actively avoiding shopping with retailers not offering contactless payments.

Furthermore, close to 30% of consumers feel uncomfortable using cash for purchases right now. And more than half (53%) use contactless payments often when shopping in-store during COVID-19. Consumers (41%) also expect retailers to disinfect their Point of Sale (POS) areas during this holiday shopping season.

However, retailers are making more effort to implement contactless payments solutions. More than three in four or 78% of retailers currently accept contactless payment solutions. Another 57% of merchants say they have invested in this technology since March 2020.

Safety Protocols

What do consumers expect with in-store health and safety protocols? For businesses of any size, having these protocols will make consumers more comfortable so they can shop in retail stores.

The top five in-store health and safety consumers look for are:

  • Hand sanitizer (80%)
  • Masked employees (60%)
  • Sanitizing wipes (55%)
  • Social distancing floor makers (55%)
  • Disposable masks (for customers) (49%)

Additionally, 41% of consumers also expect businesses to disinfect their POS areas after every customer. And another 49% are planning to implement more health and safety protocols to prepare for the holiday season. Likewise, 41% are going to limit the capacity of their place of business to further protect their customers.

Until there is a safe vaccine, businesses must deploy more options to make their customers safe. This includes cleaning the environment, implementing contactless payment options, curbside pickup, delivery and more.

When you’re not in tune with your team on what is going on, things can go awry. Department store Macy’s found that out this week when the Twitter account of the famed store sent out a Twitter post describing a Black Greek group at their annual Thanksgiving parade as a “diverse dance group’ according to Deadline.

On Thursday during the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade, the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta had performed a step routine and after their performance, the Macy’s Twitter account had posted a video clip with the caption, “What’s that sound, you ask? Why it’s the diverse dance group, Zeta Phi Beta Steppers! Performing a special routine they put together to help us celebrate this unprecedented year #MacysParade.”

Black Twitter immediately chastised the department store giant and after the backlash, Macy’s deleted the Tweet and issued the one below.

Look who just STEPPED things up. 👏 We loved having @ZPHIBHQ — an international, historically Black Sorority —with us at the #MacysParade for their centennial.

— Macy’s (@Macys) November 26, 2020

Yet, they still received criticism from Twitter users who had a few suggestions of their own.

Naw. Issue them a FULL PUBLIC apology, donate millions to HBCU’s and Black Greek Letter Organizations, open a new upper level position with a team at Macy’s that works to ensure information is accurate, respect is given, research is done and folks are represented.

— Ohun Ashe 🌻🌼🌞 (@Ohun_Ashe) November 26, 2020

Thank you for taking down the previous tweet and recognizing the amazing women of @ZPHIBHQ for who they are. This was a culturally relevant moment that they shared and they deserved to be identified correctly. #DivineNine

— The Gourmet Goober. (@JJOutlaw) November 27, 2020

I’m really going to need you all to hire more black talent on your social team. #RepresentationMatters

— Lona Vincent (@Lona_Vincent) November 26, 2020

An ounce of research goes a long way. Calling Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. a “diverse dance group” is the equivalent of calling the Leauge of Women Voters “girls who do voter registration drives.” This corrected tweet is a start, but do better FROM the start Macys.

— KJ (@PrissyKFJ) November 27, 2020

So glad you cleaned that fiasco up! Hopefully this will be a great lesson about diversity for the company. My Sorors did an amazing job!! Always proud !

— Adia __m_James (@AdiamJames1) November 28, 2020

Okay now apologize for your disrespect

The seeds of racism were planted in Hollywood many years ago, but it still bears the fruit of it today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Faizon Love has filed a lawsuit against Universal for leaving him and his “wife” co-star Kali Hawk off posters promoting the 2009 movie, “Couples Retreat.” Love and Hawk was, coincidentally, the only couple that wasn’t white.

According to the lawsuit Love filed, he stated he was “aghast” when finding out that Universal included him and Hawk in the domestic movie poster but, took the couple off for the international version.

“Universal Studios had no problem featuring Black actors in the comedic film,” it says in the complaint. “But when it came to publicizing the film to international audiences, Universal Studios chose to segregate the motion picture’s White and Black actors… Rather than enjoy maximum visibility with the film’s release, Mr. Love was demoted to the proverbial ‘Invisible Man,’ as penned by Ralph Ellison. Although Couples Retreat achieved a first-place box office opening weekend ranking, and went on a spectacular run that grossed more than $171 million worldwide, Universal Studios placed Mr. Love in the back seat of the ride enjoyed by his six White costars.”

People ask why now? One because Universal is still using the edited poster to promote the movie overseas, two no one said any thing when they went back ten years and ask @KevinHart4real to explain his ”tweet” that kept him from hosting the Oscars…not one person said why now…

— Faizon Love AKA Alvin Tostig (@FAIZONLOVE) November 26, 2020

According to Variety, Love stated, “They have not only hurt me financially, they have hurt me in a deeper way by dismissing me because of my Blackness — and they have hurt all Black performers by continuing to perpetuate racism in the movie industry. I want to ensure that future generations don’t have to endure the racism and whitewashing that I have experienced.”

The lawsuit accuses Universal of fraud, breach of contract, and violation of California’s fair employment act and civil rights law.

Arguably the world’s greatest basketball player, Charlotte Hornets owner and former Chicago Bulls legend, Michael Jordan, has scored again! The NBA Hall of Famer has made a $2 million donation to Feeding America to assist in its mission to help end hunger.

The organization posted about Jordan’s latest contribution on their Twitter account earlier this week.

An incredible gift to be thankful for – NBA legend Michael Jordan is donating $2 million to help our neighbors facing hunger! #TheLastDance

Every action makes a difference. Join Michael & visit to learn how you can donate or volunteer this holiday season.

— Feeding America (@FeedingAmerica) November 25, 2020

The 6 time NBA champion has donated funds from the ESPN documentary that aired earlier this year, “The Last Dance.”

In a written statement, Jordan said, “In these challenging times and in a year of unimaginable difficulty due to COVID-19, it’s more important than ever to pause and give thanks. I am proud to be donating additional proceeds from The Last Dance to Feeding America and its member food banks in the Carolinas and Chicago to help feed America’s hungry.”

The former basketball player has been busy this year! Just over a year after Michael Jordan opened a medical clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, he has opened a second location in Charlotte last month.

Two months ago, Jordan announced the purchase of a NASCAR Cup Series Charter with Bubba Wallace as the driver when the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season begins.

At the beginning of the summer, Jordan and Jordan Brand committed to donating $100 million over 10 years to directly impact the fight against systemic racism. In July, the brand had announced that the donations will be focused on three priority areas: social justice, economic justice, and education and awareness.

Just because President Trump and his immigration polices won’t be around much longer, doesn’t mean immigration advocates will go easy on President-elect Joe Biden.

Immigration advocates expect Biden to do more than restore the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Many advocates also want Biden to atone for the mistakes made by the Obama administration.

Earlier this week, Biden named Alejandro Mayorkas, a Cuban-born immigrant and one of the men who crafted the DACA program as his director of Homeland Security. Advocates agreed with Myorkas’ selection but are still closely eyeballing Biden to ensure his immigration policies help those who are seeking refuge.

“The end of the Trump administration is a moment to really consider how the system as it exists was so easily bent to the whims of xenophobic political pressure,” Marie Mark, a lawyer at the Immigrant Defense Project told Black Enterprise. “We cannot go back to the “felons not families” policies of the Obama administration We are looking to the Biden administration to make changes that end the treatment of our community members as disposable after contacts with the racist criminal legal system.”

Immigration advocates praised Obama for creating DACA, but also called him the deporter in chief. Advocates also took the former president to task for dragging his feet on immigration reform during his time in office.

Politico noted multiple Hispanic caucus members said they would be disappointed if Biden also dragged his feet on immigration reform. In an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, Biden acknowledged some of his plans for his first 100 days as president will hinge on the cooperation he receives from Congress.

“In the first 100 days, I will send a immigration bill to the United States Senate with a pathway to citizenship for over 11 million undocumented people in America,” Biden told Holt.

During his primary run, Biden promised to immediately reinstate DACA, which the Trump tried to dismantle. Biden also promised to protect the Temporary Protected Status, which protects immigrants who are already in the U.S. and can’t go home due to a natural disaster or civil conflict.

The Trump administration began its push to phase out the TPS program in 2018 for immigrants from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Haiti, Sudan and Nepal. Biden also promised to reunite the more than 500 children that were separated from their parents by the Trump administration, although he hasn’t said how.

The excitement of a Black woman becoming Vice President of the United States has sent a shock wave of amazement, support and happiness among the people. Barack Obama becoming president was definitely an achievement that is still being heralded among people of color and now Senator Kamala Harris reaching a pinnacle not even thought about in recent years has energized people, specifically the youth in acknowledging this feat.

This accomplishment gave a young Bay Area 14-year-old teenager, Tyler Gordon, the inspiration to utilize his artistic talents to place an image he drew to canvas. The young painter then posted, on his Twitter account, a clip of him painting the image of Harris and he tweeted the photo to her as well as he asked his followers to retweet and tag her for the possibility of her seeing it.

@KamalaHarris My name is Tyler Gordon and I’m 14 years old and I live in the Bay Area! I painted this picture of you and I hope you like it!!! Please Rt and tag her so that she can see this. Please!!!@JoeBiden @DouglasEmhoff @SenKamalaHarris @WeGotGame2

— Tyler Gordon (@Official_tylerg) November 23, 2020

Well, the gamble paid off and Vice President-elect Harris did see the post. Not only did she see the post, according to a follow up post from Gordon, she actually called him!

She called me!!!!!! @KamalaHarris called ME!!!!

— Tyler Gordon (@Official_tylerg) November 26, 2020

Gordon also posted the phone call he received and thanked former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, who had also forwarded the original post for Harris to see.

Thank you so much Mrs. @KamalaHarris it was amazing talking with you today!!!

Also thank you Mrs. @ChelseaClinton for believing in me and helping me to reach Mrs. Harris!!!
